An Evening With...Darke House

darke This evening event was a chance to tour the Darke House, designed and built as his family home by Geoffrey Darke (of Darbourne and Darke) the award winning architect of some of London’s best known and now listed social housing projects including Lillington Gardens in Pimlico.

Simon Callender & Martina Martin, the new Darke House owners hosted this evening at the house where Geoffrey and his family lived until the early 80s. They have renovated the house with the help, advice and support of Geoffrey’s widow, Jean, and architect son Chris.

Designed and built on infill land in 1968 the house has been described as a ‘modernist gem’ boasting
a Georgian proportioned front elevation with a more avant garde ‘turret’ design at the rear. Nearly all of the original features remain including extensive
Peter Nelson lighting, original glass mosaic
bathroom tiling, solid wood kitchen and all fittings, integral teak bookshelves in the living room and Danish triple glazed wooden windows throughout.

The house was Grade two listed in the mid 00s as the country’s ‘best example of a modernist house in a Georgian setting’.
