New Season 2011: Exemplar Masterclasses are back at Open-City
Open-City is pleased to announce its new season of the highly successful Exemplar masterclasses
for local councillors. This year's theme is the Liveable City.
During this series of Masterclass sessions, running to November 2011,
we will be exploring how a well-designed built environment can contribute to
making the capital a more liveable city for its residents.
The first 20 places booked will receive a free place on one of our site visits
to either Kings Cross Central or the Stratford Olympic Site later this
year. Spaces are limited so do book early to avoid disappointment.

About Exemplar
Exemplar is our design-awareness programme for local councillors involved in planning and development.
Planning policy stresses that good design is indivisible from good planning; that mediocre design should not be accepted, and that high-quality design should be the aim of all in the development process.
Exemplar provides a space in which those involved in planning and development can interrogate what ‘good design’ really is, the benefits it brings, and how to ensure that aspirations can become reality. The programme uses our expertise in architecture as a learning tool to equip participants with the tools and language to evaluate and argue for a high standard and appropriate design.
All of our masterclasses take place on site – they take the view that ‘seeing is believing’. Our sessions also encourage attendees from across London, taking participants out of their usual comfort zones and into territories that may be unfamiliar. All the visits take in ‘exemplar’ schemes – developments that demonstrate the benefits of simple design principles, an appreciation of social and historic context, and a willingness to aspire to the provision of a higher quality of life. London is overwhelmed with excellent recent schemes, and we hope to visit as many as possible, including major interventions on the back of the Olympics, major retail investment and in meeting London’s housing needs.
