Benefits of ‘Healthy Streets’ and Opportunities and Barriers to Their Delivery on London’s Southbank
BWB Consulting Ltd & Better Bankside
17 May 2018
18.30pm - 20.00 pm
11 Borough High St, London SE1 9QG
BWB Consulting Ltd, in conjunction with our local Business Improvement District (BID) ‘Better Bankside’, are delighted to deliver this event which will explore how we can ‘put people first’ when it comes to planning, designing, delivering and maintaining excellent quality streets and public realm. The Mayor and TfL recently published their 'healthy streets' approach, which puts people and their health at the centre of decisions about designing, managing and using public spaces. It introduces ten ‘indicators’ of a healthy street, which focus on the user experience (e.g. reducing traffic and pollution, and making them more attractive). The event will start with a guided walking tour of the local Southbank area (led by Better Bankside) to see real examples of how public realm enhancement measures have been put into practice at the BID level. We will then return to BWB’s offices on Borough High Street and investigate the principles underpinning these indicators, and how health impacts can be assessed and mitigated (particularly those related to noise and air quality). The event will conclude with a discussion about best practice innovation (including smart/IoT technology), as well as barriers and opportunities to implementation.
