Open City makes London and its urban landscape more open, accessible and equitable. We help citizens of all backgrounds to understand and engage with how the city is designed and made, and have a role in shaping its future.

Accelerate is Open City's flagship built environment education programme for young people aged 16-18 from underrepresented backgrounds to explore careers in architecture, landscape, planning, engineering, and related fields. Through a series of skills development workshops and professional mentoring, the programme supports participants with the skills, portfolios, networks, and confidence to make informed progression choices.

We value working collaboratively, being open to sharing experiences, respecting one another, and creating a welcoming environment for exploration, learning, and creativity.

Now 13 years in, Accelerate has offered a platform to more than 500 young Londoners from historically marginalised backgrounds to create, express, and develop their ideas as they consider their futures.

We are looking to appoint two new teaching assistants for the 2025/26 academic year.

The Role:

  • 10 teaching days: Delivering 10 pre-planned creative skills workshops alongside another teacher on Saturdays between October 2025 and April 2026, for 16-18 year olds.

  • Two course planning days: Working with the Accelerate team between August and September to create robust and engaging workshops and course material.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is passionate about diversifying the built environment professions, making them more representative of the people they serve by educating young people.

  • Can inspire, engage and organise an audience of 30 sixth form students.

  • Has an interest in the heritage of London and its built environment and shares in Open City’s core values that our city should be open and accessible to all.

  • Is familiar with the UK school curriculum and has the confidence to work closely with teachers and students of all ages.

  • Is punctual and able to arrive on time or early for scheduled events.

  • Has very strong organisational and communication skills and is confident in the use of the Google suite to generate and deliver presentations.

  • Is proactive, resourceful and good at problem solving.

Please send a CV and covering letter explaining your background and interest in the position to Siraaj Mitha at recruitment@open-city.org.uk with the subject line “Accelerate Teaching Assistant”.

The deadline is midnight on Sunday 6 July with interviews taking place in the week commencing Monday 21 July 2024 at the Design District in North Greenwich.
