Through the lens: Photographing the City of London with Grant Smith

Join Open House for a socially-distanced photography tour and discover how you can use your camera or phone to create fresh and inspiring new perspectives on the City of London

Led by acclaimed architectural photographer Grant Smith — member of world-famous architecture imaging agency VIEW — this mid-morning walking tour will examine different ways of observing and photographing the City of London’s ever-changing built environment.

The tour will cover a range of core skills and topics — including the optimum time of day to photograph the Square Mile’s buildings and monuments as well as photographers' rights to create images in public. By the end of this event, participants will be able to confidently identify the City’s various enigmatic architectural styles and will have discovered the key approaches to creating high-quality, thought-provoking architectural photography.

This is an in person tour and the guide is with you for the duration of the tour, Zoom is used to allow increased participant spacing. Participants should be familiar with the manual functions of their camera or phone. 

Attendees must download Zoom before the tour, bring a fully charged smart phone with internet connection, and headphones; and remember to stay at least two metres apart from each other where required. Meet the tour guide…

Grant Smith was born in Australia, and has lived and worked in London since 1983 gathering an extensive knowledge of London's architecture. His body of work includes some of the world's most iconic structures. 

He is commissioned by all sectors of the industry including design companies, magazines, architects, contractors and engineers. His portrait work takes him beyond the architectural and construction industry and into all sectors of commerce. He was Chairman of the Association of Photographers from 2001 to 2003. 

Grant has been involved in the organisation 'I'm a Photographer, Not a Terrorist' and has written articles on the subject of photographers' working in public space and continues to campaign for photographers' rights to shoot in public. He has been involved with Open House and Open House Tours for over 15 years.
