Sustainability Sunday Special – a series of short talks from special guests Andrew Waugh, Pierre Bidaud, Liam Bryant, and the House of Bricoleurs.

This Sunday afternoon talk on the final day of the Festival will be a joyful and positive look at the power of architecture and materials to build a more sustainable and equitable future. A series of short talks by built environment experts will offer insights into the importance of material choice, the life cycle of materials and how craft and technology are offering new possibilities for positive change.

Andrew Waugh is a founding director of Waugh Thistleton Architects. The practice’s ethos is to design and construct sustainable, beautiful buildings. Recent work includes the exemplary timber office building The Black & White Building which can be visited as part of this year’s Open House Festival.

Pierre Bidaud is Creative Director of the Stonemasonry Company. The company are leading the conversation on structural stone. Pierre worked closely, alongside engineer Steve Webb of Webb Yates, with Amin Taha of Groupwork to build the remarkable structural stone 15 Clerkenwell Close.

Liam Bryant is an engineer at Webb Yates and a member of The Planeteers, an internal climate action task force working to develop new and innovative solutions to deliver low carbon design.

The House of Bricoleurs was established in 2023 by Albane Duvillier and Elliot Rogosin. The practice works with existing landscapes, living beings, materials, buildings and consider environmental and social justice issues to be interconnected.

The talk will take place at 2pm in the Basinghall Suite in the Guildhall Art Gallery.

Guildhall is home to the City of London Corporation and the centre of government in the City of London. The medieval Great Hall with its soaring ceiling and two huge, Gothic stained-glass windows is still, centuries after its completion, a stunning sight. The talk will take place in the Victorian Guildhall Art Gallery, built to display the City of London Corporation’s growing art collection. Destroyed in the Second World War, the building was rebuilt to incorporate the remains of London’s Roman Amphitheatre, discovered during the building’s reconstruction.
