Discover Open House Festival’s rising star photographers

This year, Arts Council England supported a collaboration between Open City and The Photography Foundation to provide eight photographers in the early stages of their career with development and paid commissions to shoot the Open House Festival.

Five photographers from this cohort were alumni of The Photography Foundation. This training programme allowed us to support the Foundation’s mission to diversify and improve access to photography careers.

We asked some of the participating photographers to tell us a bit more about their favourite shot captured during the festival.

Trinity Buoy Wharf / Container City by Tsipora St. Clair Knights

‘This is one of my favourite photographs that I took across my 2 days at the Open House Festival this year - I'd never been to Trinity Buoy Wharf before and I think that this image encapsulates the combination of both the industrial and artistic atmosphere that has been cultivated there. I like the fact that I was able to get a photo of the sculptor, Andrew Baldwin (as he was packing away his work) against the backdrop of the old Boiler House and the way it compliments with the pops of bold primary colours.’

Brixton Railway Station (visited on a tour organised by Brixton Recreation Centre) by Nadim Kurimbokus

‘It was hard to pick a favourite image, but I chose this one. The more I look at it the more things I notice.’

Stationers’ Hall by Anna-Rose McChesney

‘This photo was taken at Stationers Hall, a livery in the city. I saw the light coming through the window and hitting this man's face whilst he was quietly reading a booklet about the building. I enjoy the colours and the calm atmosphere, he had found a moment in the hustle and bustle of the busy day to learn about the Stationers Hall.’

Trinity Buoy Wharf / Container City by Koice M

‘This image not only highlights the colourful, artistic and community environment of Trinity Buoy Wharf as a location, but also highlights the curiosity and exploratory nature of what the Open House Festival is all about.’
