Accelerate 2023/24 student work to feature in RA Summer Show

“A Young Londoner’s London” created by the Accelerate 2023/2024 cohort.

Open City Education is thrilled to announce the inclusion of “A Young Londoner’s London” in the Architecture Room of this year’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, curated by Assemble. The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition is the world’s oldest open submission exhibition and takes place at the Royal Academy of Arts in Piccadilly.

The piece consists of a collaborative sculpture of plaster casts created by the 2023/2024 cohort of Accelerate students. The elements of the sculpture were fabricated during one of the ten Accelerate workshops in this past academic year, where the students learned to plaster cast. Participants were tasked with creating a personal map of London. The wall mounted grid of the casts vary in texture and display a process of learning and interpretation. While forty-nine casts were selected out of ninety created, the spirit of the collective is evident in the overall piece.

The Accelerate programme is designed to give students who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity, a chance to explore whether a career in the built environment is for them. We are filled with gratitude to all of our Accelerate students for bringing such enthusiasm and hard work on this project, as well as our teaching staff for developing this work with our young people. Additionally, we wish to thank Accelerate Course Leader Elliot Nash and Open City Development Manager Ben Lewis, for their assistance with the assembly and submission of this project.
