At Home with Open House, Golden Lane Estate designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon

IMG_6926.jpeg

As part of our new live-streamed series of tours of remarkable interiors across the capital, we will be exploring two types of residence at Golden Lane Estate with Sue Pearson and Roland Jeffery. They will be joined by guest interviewer Paul Lincoln, who is commissioning editor for Landscape, the journal of the Landscape Institute and a City of London Guide. He has lived on Golden Lane Estate for fifteen years.

In 1952 the Royal Institute of British Architects organised an architectural competition for the City. The challenge was to create a design for an estate with 940 residents at Golden Lane. There were 187 entries. The competition was won by an unknown architect, Geoffry Powell, who was declared the winner on 26 February 1952.

This competition marked the forming of the architectural practice Chamberlin, Powell and Bon who went onto design and build the Barbican Estate to the South.
