Photographing the City of London at night with Grant Smith
Join Open City for a socially-distanced photography tour and discover how to photograph the City of London at night
Led by acclaimed architectural photographer Grant Smith — member of world-famous architecture imaging agency VIEW — this evening tour will look at how to photograph the City’s iconic structures after dark. The tour includes Lloyd’s Building with its dramatic lighting. The tour will take in City streetscapes so you can practice with light trails.
The tour ends by Tower Bridge — illuminated to emphasise its structure and with views to the Shard and London Bridge.
This is an introductory tour and your guide will be on hand to guide you and answer any questions as you discover the techniques of night photography.
The tour will cover:
- Illumination of the City’s buildings and how to photograph them
- Using long shutter speeds to render light trails
- Optimum time to take night photographs
- Selection of aperture, shutter and ISO to produce best results
- Your rights to photograph in public
Participants must bring their own camera and should be familiar with the manual functions of their camera. A tripod is essential for our night photography tours.
Meet: on the south west corner of Lime & Leadenhall St, by the Lloyd’s of London granite compass. EC3M 7AF. Duration 2 hrs approx. Tour ends at Tower Pier. Cost £35.50 / £20 concessions. (students/unemployed). Tours go ahead rain of shine, tickets are non refundable.

Meet the tour guide…
Grant Smith was born in Australia, and has lived and worked in London since 1983 gathering an extensive knowledge of London's architecture. His body of work includes some of the world's most iconic structures.
He is commissioned by all sectors of the industry including design companies, magazines, architects, contractors and engineers. His portrait work takes him beyond the architectural and construction industry and into all sectors of commerce. He was Chairman of the Association of Photographers from 2001 to 2003.
Grant has been involved in the organisation 'I'm a Photographer, Not a Terrorist' and has written articles on the subject of photographers' working in public space and continues to campaign for photographers' rights to shoot in public. He has been involved with Open House and Open House Tours for over 15 years.
