Dalston Curve Garden
Popular community garden in area lacking in green public space, created on abandoned railway land. Wooden pavilion & 'Pineapple House' structures.
Hackney Design Award Winner, Landscape Institute President's Award 2011.
Overview
The Garden was created in 2010 on the derelict Eastern Curve Railway Line, to offer green public space in a built up area, where few people have their own gardens.
The spacious wooden pavilion now houses the Garden's Cafe, pizza oven and seating areas, and the Pineapple House conservatory was built in 2012 to offer winter shelter and space for creative workshops. In 2018, Morag Myerscough led community workshops to create a decorated stage for the Garden's outdoor performances.
The naturalistic planting design has been developed year on year by the in-house team, including volunteers, to grow an abundance of wildlife-supporting trees, shrubs and perennials, herbs and salads, and shade-loving specimens and to provide year-round botanical interest. The overall vision is to offer residents a green sanctuary.
