Open City on the Radio

DE-CENTRING LONDON (Robert Elms)
Thursday 26th, 10:40am
One of the core curatorial themes for this year's festival, de-centring London – moving beyond Westminster – is something which we try to champion through all of our work. Phin Harper spoke to Robert Elms to kick off the radio coverage and give a general overview of the festival and some highlights for the year.

LIVE TOURS (Robert Elms)
Friday 27th, 12:10pm
Live, guided tours are one of the most popular formats in this year’s festival. What might have been perceived as the remit of tourists only, tours of the city have seen something of a renaissance. This year, we also see tours led by the first cohort from our Golden Key Academy training programme, which was established to bring new voices and narratives to the city.
Merlin Fulcher, an experienced architectural journalist and Open City’s tours director, spoke about some of the tour-based highlights of the festival which listeners were then able to attend.

WHERE DO WE LEARN NOW? (Lionheart sitting in for Jo Good)
Bank holiday 5pm
The Where do we learn now? collection looks at the different places and ways that we learn across the city. From library buildings to workshops, religious buildings to nature reserves, it is important to recognise the different ways we learn in spaces outside the home. Education and architecture have never been more important to explore
Siraaj Mitha, the new Head of Accelerate, spoke about some of the highlights from this collection as well as his wider work championing and expanding the course to reach even more young people with an interest in architecture.

STEWARDSHIP AWARDS (Robert Elms)
Wednesday 1st, 12:10pm
The new Open City Stewardship Awards were established this year to champion ecologically and socially sustainable design. Great urban stewardship is about working responsively in changing circumstances, whether that’s on a local scale, or a global one. In the wake of the recent IPCC report on global heating, it is clearer than ever that conventional approaches to urban development at all scales require strategic rethinking, and we’re excited to champion some outstanding and tangible examples of socially and environmentally pioneering practice during the festival.
Rhea Martin, Open City’s programmes manager and project lead on the awards, and Phil Askew, Head of Landscape at Peabody spoke to Robert Elms about the awards and ways to engage with the shortlist through the festival.

ARCHITECTURE BY WOMEN (Salma El-Wardany)
Wednesday 1st, 11:30pm
In a late night slot with Salma El-Wardany, Roz Peebles – an Open City tour guide – spoke about some of the stops on the South London tour (run with Aidan Hall) which are included in the festival, including buildings by pioneering female architects.

PUBLIC HOUSE (Robert Elms)
Saturday 4th, 11:35am
Public House: A cultural and social history of the London Pub is edited by the architect Cristina Monteiro and designer David Knight and features a wide range of contributing writers.
